Temporary Activity Visa – Training Subclass 407

The 407 visa aims to promote international goodwill by allowing Australian organisations to sponsor persons to travel to Australia to participate in occupational training activities, including classroom-based professional development activities. It is mostly used by companies seeking to enhance the skills of an overseas person through an inhouse structured training program.

    How This Visa Works

The visa application can be made either in or outside of Australia.

There are three types of occupational training covered by this visa:

    1. Workplace-based training required for registration
    This type of occupational training is for people who are required to undertake workplace-based training to obtain registration, membership or licensing – in Australia or their home country – to work in their occupation;

    2. Structured workplace-based training to enhance skills in an eligible occupation
This type of occupational training is for people with recent and suitable experience in the nominated occupation, who are seeking to undertake a structured workplace-based training program provided by an Australian business in relation to an occupation specified in the list of eligible skilled occupations.

    3. Training that promotes capacity building overseas
This type of occupational training includes the following categories:

    • Overseas qualification: enables students currently enrolled in a foreign educational institution – and who are required to complete a period of practical training, research or observation to obtain their qualification – the opportunity to undertake up to six months of structured workplace-based training in Australia
    • Government support: allows structured workplace-based occupational training, providing it has the support of a government agency (in Australia or the home country of the nominated trainee)
    • Professional development enables overseas employers to send their managerial or professional employees to Australia to undertake a tailored professional development program of face-to-face teaching in a classroom (or similar environment).

    Visa Process:

The application process comprises three stages: sponsorship, nomination and visa application. The training plan must be presented at the nomination stage and should be highly customised to the training needs of the visa applicant.

A Training visa can be granted for up to two years or less depending on the skills the applicant already has.

What Does This Visa Let You Do?

The holder of a 407 visa must work for the employer that has sponsored them under this visa for the duration of the visa.

    Frequently asked questions

    • Where can I see my current visa status?

As a visa holder, you can use VEVO to check your current visa details and conditions.

    • What are the Transitional Arrangements if I held a 457 visa or applied for a 457 visa prior to 18th April 2017

You are required to apply for an RRV (Resident Return visa) if your permanent visa is about to expire and you intend to depart Australia.

If you’ve been living in Australia for at least two years (this can be accumulative) in the last five years prior to lodging your visa, you will be granted a new five-year block of time so you can continue with your permanent residence visa.

If you have been living in Australia for less than two years in the last five years prior to the date of your RRV application, you may be eligible for a one-year RRV. To be eligible, you would need to present evidence of your ties to Australia, such as employment, family or business commitments.

If you live in Australia and your permanent residence visa expires, your status will automatically carry over – meaning you will continue to have permanent resident visa status. If you then wish to travel outside Australia, you will need to apply for an RRV, which will enable you to return using your current visa.

    Client Story

    NICHOLAS YANG

Nicholas was an engineering professional in Singapore. He applied for the Skilled Migration visa and his permanent resident visa was granted on June 2012.

I was introduced to AustraliaMigrate by my sister. Prior to my application, two of my family members was engaged with AustraliaMigrate in visa applications.

What motivated me the most to carry out the visa application was my 4 siblings who are currently residing in Sydney. Initially, I tried to conduct my visa application through some company online but I deemed them to be unsuccessful due to weak and frustrating support they provide.
